The article gives an updated overview of Latin American Higher Education, focussing on MERCOSUR, and develops the influential processes in the expansion of enrollment. In this sense, the evolution and impact of the 14 years of compulsory school in the region are analyzed; the notable increase in female participation at all educational levels and the degree of commitment in educational financing of the member countries. Innovative experiences implemented to achieve higher rates of educational coverage in the most disadvataged regions and sectors of the population are carefully analyzed, which allowed the participation in Higher Education of previously underrepresented subjects. Data on the incidence of private education, especially in Argentina, is provided as well. Great advances are mentioned but difficulties for vulnerable sectors to access to quality compulsory Education and even Higher Education. Thanks to the updated data on the coverage and permanence rates in Higher Education in MERCOSUR, the entry of the most disadvantaged sectors of the population is specially analyzed. Hence, a mixed picture is offered in which the particularities of whom today are Higher Education students is take into account. The article concludes with the outstanding challenge and some proposals to reach the mandatory schooling rate, reduce the gap according to the urban-rural origin of the students and the difference between students with lower income and higher income, to increase their representation in Higher Education |

En ese sentido, se analiza la evolución e impacto de los 14 años de escolaridad obligatoria en la región; el notable incremento de la participación femenina en todos los niveles educativos y el grado de compromiso en el financiamiento educativo de los países parte. Se focalizan experiencias innovadoras implementadas para lograr mayores tasas de cobertura en regiones y sectores de la población más desfavorecidos, y que permitieron la aparición en Educación Superior de sujetos antes poco representados. También se ofrecen datos de la incidencia de la educación privada, especialmente en Argentina. Se destacan grandes avances aunque también dificultades para que sectores vulnerables asistan a una educación obligatoria de calidad y accedan a la Educación Superior. Gracias a datos actualizados de las tasas de cobertura y permanencia en la Educación Superior en el MERCOSUR, se focaliza en el ingreso de sectores más desfavorecidos de la población. Se ofrece entonces un panorama heterogéneo en el que se destacan análisis que apuntan a las particularidades de los sujetos que hoy constituyen los estudiantes de la Educación Superior. El trabajo concluye con los desafíos pendientes y algunas propuestas en pos de cubrir la tasa de escolarización obligatoria, acortar la brecha según el origen urbano-rural y entre los alumnos de quintiles más desfavorecidos con respecto a los de mejores recursos, para incrementar su representación en ese sector educativo O artigo oferece um panorama atualizado da Educação Superior latino-americana com foco no Mercosul, desenvolvendo forte processo na expansão da matrícula. Nesse sentido, é analisada a evolução e o impacto de 14 anos de escolaridade obrigatória na região, com notável aumento da participação feminina em todos os níveis educacionais, bem como o grau de compromisso no financiamento educacional dos países da região. Serão priorizadas experiências inovadoras implementadas para obter maiores taxas de cobertura nas regiões e nos setores de população mais vulneráveis, o que possibilitou o aparecimento deste público nos índices da Educação Superior. Serão observados os dados da educação privada, em especial na Argentina. Destacam-se grandes avanços obtidos, apesar das dificuldades dos setores vulneráveis em ter acesso a uma educação obrigatória de qualidade e da Educação Superior. Os dados atualizados das taxas de cobertura e de permanência da Educação Superior no Mercosul, estão focalizados no ingresso dos setores mais desfavorecidos da população. Assim sendo, mostra-se um panorama heterogêneo em que se destacam as particularidades dos discentes da Educação Superior.
