Sumario:The article addresses the theme of the third mission of Universities, related to innovation and the role of Universities as a vector of the development process of the society where they operate. In this sense, it analyzes the main models of University-Enterprise-Government interaction, the Triple and Quadruple Helix approach of local development and the role of innovation in this process. At the end, it reflects on the possibilities, challenges and opportunities of innovation as a factor for the development of territories, concluding that the balance between tradition (represented by academic values) and innovation (represented by the new demands of society) is the differential that the best Universities of the future are building today.
