The article addresses the theme of the third mission of Universities, related to innovation and the role of Universities as a vector of the development process of the society where they operate. In this sense, it analyzes the main models of University-Enterprise-Government interaction, the Triple and Quadruple Helix approach of local development and the role of innovation in this process. At the end, it reflects on the possibilities, challenges and opportunities of innovation as a factor for the development of territories, concluding that the balance between tradition (represented by academic values) and innovation (represented by the new demands of society) is the differential that the best Universities of the future are building today. El artículo aborda el tema de la tercera misión de las universidades, relacionado con la innovación y el papel de las mismas como vector del proceso de desarrollo de la sociedad donde actúan. En este sentido, analiza los principales modelos de interacción Universidad-Empresa-Gobierno, el enfoque de la Triple y Cuádruple Hélice del desarrollo local y el papel de la innovación en este proceso. Al final, reflexiona sobre las posibilidades, desafíos y oportunidades de la innovación como factor de desarrollo de los territorios, concluyendo que el equilibrio entre tradición (representada por los valores académicos) e innovación (representada por las demandas de la sociedad) es el diferencial que las mejores Universidades del futuro están construyendo hoy. O artigo aborda a temática da terceira missão das Universidades, relacionadas com a inovação e o papel das Universidades como vetor do processo de desenvolvimento da sociedade onde atuam. Neste sentido, analisa os principais modelos de interação Universidade-Empresa-Governo, a abordagem da Tripla e Quadrupla Hélice de desenvolvimento local e o papel da inovação neste processo. Ao final realiza uma reflexão sobre as possibilidades, desafios e oportunidades da inovação como fator de desenvolvimento dos territórios, concluindo que o balanço entre a tradição (representada pelos valores acadêmicos) e a renovação (representada pelas novas demandas da sociedade) é o diferencial que as melhores Universidades do futuro estão construindo hoje.
