Desde 1986 es profesor en el Departamento de Geografía de la Universidad Federal Fluminense, donde es director del Núcleo de Estudios sobre Globalización y Regionalización (NUREG). En 2003 fue Becario Postdoctoral en Geografía de la Universidad Abierta en Inglaterra.  Además se ha desempeñado como profesor visitante en la Universidad Abierta (2003), la Universidad de Toulouse-Le-Mirail (2009), la Universidad de Buenos Aires (2010) y la Universidad de Paris VIII (2011).
