In this case, urban planning is essential to break with these issues, becoming an important instrument, especially for Brazil, where shortages and bureaucracy, from this point of view, are significant. Urban planning is not only a contribution for big cities, but also for small cities that need planning to reduce urban problems. In this work, the objective is: a) to discuss about urban planning, approaching Brazil, focusing on the 19th and 20th centuries; b) dialogue about urban planning in small Brazilian cities. For this, a bibliographical research was used, with a literature review. The readings were chosen favoring some recognized authors who work with the theme. The work aims to contribute to the discussions of urban geography, on the urban planning of small towns.
