Thinking of television series as a source and agent of history, the present work analyzes Spartacus: Blood and Sand (2010) in the light of the socio-cultural context in which it is produced and in contrast to Spartacus (Kubrik, 1960), the paradigmatic film. Particular emphasis is given to the way in which the series takes the concept of peplum to its limits and reformulates it adding, at the same time, questions relating to the air of current times: neoliberal individualism, violence without reflection, spectacle society, the aesthetics and the rhythm of videogames and the new forms of homoerotism.
