The objective of this article is to analyze the discursive practices surrounding the permanent exhibition “Desert, Migration and Border” (DMF), inaugurated at the beginning of the 21st century at the University Museum of Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico. This exhibition was produced under the gaze of cultural studies, leaving museology and its proposals aside, so we focus the discussion on this area of study and argue that the institutionalization of cultural studies allowed, at the time, to update the discourse on local history and culture. We consider the DMF permanent exhibition as a locus where power, conflict, co-optation and resistance are interwoven around what is exhibited and interpreted. Methodologically, we started from “radical contextualism”, which allows us to situate, relationally and processually, the meaning of what the museum shows. To this end, the museum’s foundational documents were reviewed and, at the same time, focus groups, workshops and tours of the exhibition were organized. We conclude that the critical view of cultural studies did not necessarily upset the interpretative frameworks on time and culture that reproduce otherness in terms of power; therefore, there is a need to establish a political/institutional practice in the museum that takes up the proposed dynamism on discourse and culture, opening this field of study, based on the analysis proposed in this paper. |

El artículo tiene como objetivo analizar las prácticas discursivas que yacen en la sala permanente Historia y Cultura, del museo universitario de Mexicali, Baja California, México. Exposición producida desde el campo de los estudios culturales, pero dejando al margen las propuestas de la museología contemporánea, por lo cual centramos la discusión en ese campo de estudio. Argumentamos que la institucionalización de los estudios culturales permitió actualizar el discurso sobre la historia y la cultura local desde una perspectiva novedosa y, aparentemente, subversiva, sin embargo, en la actualidad, explicita una concepción tradicional sobre la cultura que, en sus inicios se había cuestionado. Metodológicamente se partió del “contextualismo radical” para situar, relacional y procesualmente, el sentido de lo que el museo muestra. Para ello, se revisaron documentos oficiales y, a la par, se organizaron grupos focales, talleres y recorridos por la exposición. Concluimos que la mirada reflexiva de los estudios culturales no necesariamente trastocó los marcos interpretativos sobre el tiempo y la cultura que reproducen la otredad en términos de poder; por lo que existe la necesidad de establecer una práctica política/institucional que retome, articuladamente, las posiciones críticas tanto de los estudios culturales como de la actual museología. O objetivo deste artigo é analisar as práticas discursivas que se encontram na sala permanente de História e Cultura do museu universitário de Mexicali, Baja California, México. Trata-se de uma exposição produzida a partir do campo dos estudos culturais, mas deixando de lado as propostas da museologia contemporânea, razão pela qual concentramos a discussão nesse campo de estudo. Argumentamos que a institucionalização dos estudos culturais possibilitou a atualização do discurso sobre a história e a cultura local a partir de uma perspectiva nova e aparentemente subversiva, mas que, no momento atual, explicita uma concepção tradicional de cultura que havia sido questionada no início. Metodologicamente, o ponto de partida foi o “contextualismo radical”, a fim de situar, de forma relacional e processual, o significado do que o museu mostra. Para isso, foram analisados documentos oficiais e, ao mesmo tempo, foram organizados grupos de discussão, workshops e visitas à exposição. Concluímos que o olhar reflexivo dos estudos culturais não derrubou necessariamente as estruturas interpretativas do tempo e da cultura que reproduzem a alteridade em termos de poder; portanto, é necessário estabelecer uma prática política/institucional que assuma articuladamente as posições críticas tanto dos estudos culturais quanto da museologia atual.
