The objective of this study is to analyze trauma frequency in bone remains of individuals from the Atlantic coast and the lower Chubut River valley (Chubut province, Argentina) to discuss this trend. Forty adult individuals were studied (26 from the coast and 14 from the Valley). Injuries were quantified according to three periods, in 30 skeletons with chronological data: A (2500-1000 years BP; n=20); B (1000-500 years BP; n=4); and C (during the contact natives-Europeans; n=6). Fifteen lesions were recorded in 11 individuals (27.5%), six females and five males, six of them being middle-aged adults. Three skulls (9.7%) and nine postcranial skeletons (28.1) were diagnosed, without clear evidence of interpersonal violence. Six individuals (23.1%) are from coastal sites and five (35.7%) are from the valley, without statistical differences. Injuries were identified in four skeletons from period A (25%), one from period B (20%), and three from period C (50%). The results show a high frequency of trauma, with no significant differences among subregions. The frequency increases only during the contact period, but this data require further studies, including new chronological analyses.

Estudios previos aportaron información dispar acerca de la frecuencia de traumas óseos en poblaciones cazadoras-recolectoras patagónicas, observándose un aumento moderado a partir del Holoceno tardío final, que algunos autores vinculan al crecimiento demográfico. El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar la frecuencia de traumas en restos óseos de individuos procedentes de dos ambientes de la provincia de Chubut, la Costa Atlántica y el Valle Inferior del Río Chubut, que permitan discutir esta tendencia. Se estudiaron 40 individuos adultos; 26 de la Costa Atlántica (Costa Norte n=17; Costa Centro n=9) y 14 del Valle Inferior del Río Chubut. La muestra con cronología radiocarbónica fue distribuida según tres bloques temporales: A (2500-1000 años AP, n=20); B (1000-500 años AP, n=4) y C (Postcontacto, n=6). En total se registraron 15 lesiones en 11 individuos (27,5%), seis femeninos y cinco masculinos; seis de ellos adultos medios, entre los cuales no se identificaron evidencias claras de violencia. Las lesiones afectaron tres cráneos (9,7%) y nueve postcráneos (28,1%). Seis individuos de la costa (23,1%) presentaron lesiones (23,5% del sector norte y 22,2% del central); en el valle inferior ascienden a cinco (35,7%). Estos resultados indican una alta frecuencia de traumas, sin diferencia de la prevalencia entre subregiones. Se registró un incremento en la frecuencia de traumas sólo en el período Postcontacto. Estos datos requieren, sin embargo, la incorporación de nuevas muestras que cuenten con dataciones radiocarbónicas. O objetivo deste artigo é analisar a frequência de traumas em restos de esqueletos de indivíduos de dois ambientes na província de Chubut, a Costa Atlântica e o Vale do Rio Chubut Inferior, a fim de discutir essa tendência. Foram estudados 40 indivíduos adultos; 26 da Costa Atlântica (Costa Norte n=17; Costa Central n=9) e 14 do Vale do Baixo Rio Chubut. A amostra com cronologia de radiocarbono foi distribuída de acordo com três blocos temporais: A (2500-1000 anos BP, n=20); B (1000-500 anos BP, n=4) e C (pós-contato, n=6). No total, foram registradas 15 lesões em 11 indivíduos (27,5%), seis do sexo feminino e cinco do sexo masculino, seis deles adultos médios, entre os quais não foi identificada nenhuma evidência clara de violência.
