Based on the excavations of two metallurgical furnaces from the Catarpe Túnel site (San Pedro de Atacama) in operation during the Late Period (A.D. 1400-1536), and oriented to the production of metallic copper, we discuss the role of woody fuel in the development of this technology in the hyper-arid context of the Atacama Desert. Our study focuses on the analysis of anthracological and carpological material, together with the analysis of the depositional characteristics of combustion events and preliminary ethnobotanical information. As a result, we propose the reconstruction of a phase of the operational chain of copper metallurgy, composed of the handling and use of woody fuel, as well as the identification of possible areas of activity developed in the structures. With this, we propose a comprehensive methodological strategy, focusing on aspects such as the recording and recovery of this type of structures with anthracological potential, which is not usually considered within the general archaeological excavation activities, which in turn is applicable to combustion structures in general, contributing to the understanding of the activities surrounding the handling and use of plant fuel. |

A partir de las excavaciones en dos hornos metalúrgicos del sitio Catarpe Túnel (San Pedro de Atacama) en operación durante el Período Tardío (1400-1536 DC), y orientados a la producción de cobre metálico, se discute el rol del combustible leñoso en el desarrollo de esta tecnología en el contexto hiperárido del desierto de Atacama. Nuestro estudio se enfoca en el análisis de material antracológico y carpológico, en conjunto con el análisis de las características depositacionales de los eventos de combustión y la información etnobotánica preliminar. Como resultado, proponemos la reconstrucción de una fase en la cadena operativa de la metalurgia del cobre, compuesta por la gestión y uso del combustible leñoso, además de la identificación de posibles áreas de actividad desarrolladas en las estructuras. Con esto, planteamos una estrategia metodológica integral, enfocada en aspectos como el registro y recuperación de este tipo de estructuras con potencial antracológico, que no suele ser considerada dentro de las actividades generales de excavación arqueológica, la que a su vez es aplicable para estructuras de combustión en general, aportando a la comprensión de las actividades en torno a la gestión y uso del combustible vegetal. Com base nas escavações de dois fornos metalúrgicos do sítio Catarpe Túnel (San Pedro de Atacama) em operação durante o período tardio (1400-1536 d.C.) e orientados para a produção de cobre metálico, discutimos o papel do combustível lenhoso no desenvolvimento dessa tecnologia no contexto hiperárido do deserto de Atacama. Nosso estudo se concentra na análise de material antracológico e carpológico, juntamente com a análise das características de deposição dos eventos de combustão e informações etnobotânicas preliminares. Como resultado, propomos a reconstrução de uma fase da cadeia operacional da metalurgia do cobre, composta pelo manejo e uso de combustível lenhoso, bem como a identificação de possíveis áreas de atividade desenvolvidas nas estruturas. Com isso, propomos uma estratégia metodológica abrangente, focada em aspectos como o registro e a recuperação desse tipo de estruturas com potencial antracológico, que não costuma ser considerado nas atividades gerais de escavação arqueológica, o que, por sua vez, é aplicável às estruturas de combustão em geral, contribuindo para o entendimento das atividades que envolvem o manejo e o uso de combustível vegetal.
