From a reconsideration and synthesis of previous work based on the analysis of files from the Córdoba juvenile courts, I argue that in that early stage of the institutionalization of adoption, formal and informal practices coexisted and fed each other in the legal processes. The realities of adoption were diverse and the judiciary adopted a flexible and tolerant attitude towards this diversity, while at the same time building around them a narrative that exalted those features that came closest to the normative family aspirations, softened those that contradicted them and concealed those that could reveal the class fictions on which those aspirations were founded.
