description |
The objective of the article is to analyze the trajectories of migrant women of Chinese origin who reside in Buenos Aires from a gender perspective. Specifically, our research question is how these women position themselves in relation to the roles that are presented to them from the cultural configurations of origin and residence. Thus, the proposal is part of a broader discussion on migration and gender, and among studies on Chinese migrant women. In a synthetic way, these investigations show a marked feminization of roles in the societies of residence and an overlapping of roles: reproductive, productive, and social representation. In this sense, our hypothesis indicates that among the Chinese women with whom we work in Buenos Aires, we observe a tension that leads them to distance themselves from the traditional role. Methodologically, we use life stories made between 2019 and 2020 of two Chinese women living in Buenos Aires and ethnographic fieldwork. We conducted a multilevel study to comprehensively understand the trajectories under study. We conclude that these Chinese women in Buenos Aires distance themselves from the traditional role of women that they are expected to develop. It would not be a feminization of roles or an overlapping of diverse roles, but rather they negotiate or distance themselves from mandates, delay times and question actions, finding spaces to satisfy their needs, desires and ambitions. |
