We not only relied on our own abilities, but also on the potentialities of anthropology for all this. We aspire to demonstrate the social and practical relevance of anthropological research. Marit and I had a common interest in Latin America and we had both prepared to do field work there learning Spanish. In the 1970s the Research Council of Norway established a line of student scholarships to carry out studies in the so-called “non-European cultures”. I obtained this scholarship (19,000 Norwegian crowns) to do field work on a new agrarian movement, the Agricultural Leagues in Argentina with Eduardo Archetti. The following year, Marit obtained another scholarship to study the processes of change in the Mapuche people of southern Chile. Due to the military coup in Chile, precisely on her birthday, on September 11, 1973, she was forced to change plans. By then, Eduardo and I were doing field work among cotton settlers in the north of the province of Santa Fe, and we motivated Marit and Svein Duus that he was going to do field work with her, to come to Argentina to do field in Corrientes, a region that also had strong agricultural leagues but with a socio-economic reality very different from that of Santa Fe.

Cuando Marit y yo empezamos a estudiar antropología a comienzos de los 70s, nuestro mayor objetivo no era prepararnos para un trabajo bien pago y una vida segura y confortable. Teníamos planes más grandes, queríamos cambiar el mundo, hacer una diferencia, y hacer del mundo un lugar mejor. No solo confiábamos en nuestras propias capacidades, sino también en las potencialidades de la antropología para todo esto. Aspirábamos a demostrar la relevancia social y práctica de la investigación antropológica. Marit y yo teníamos un interés común en América Latina y ambas nos habíamos preparado para hacer trabajo de campo allí aprendiendo el castellano. En los 1970s el Consejo de Investigación de Noruega estableció una línea de becas estudiantiles para llevar a cabo estudios en las llamadas “culturas no-europeas”. Obtuve esta beca (19 000 coronas noruegas) para hacer trabajo de campo sobre un nuevo movimiento agrario, las Ligas Agrarias en la Argentina junto a Eduardo Archetti. Al año siguiente, Marit obtuvo otra beca para estudiar los procesos de cambio en el pueblo Mapuche del sur de Chile. Debido al golpe militar en Chile, precisamente en su cumpleaños, el 11 de setiembre de 1973, fue obligada a cambiar los planes. Por entonces, Eduardo y yo estábamos haciendo trabajo de campo entre colonos algodoneros en el norte de la provincia de Santa Fe, y motivamos a Marit y a Svein Duus que iba a hacer trabajo de campo con ella, a venirse a la Argentina a hacer trabajo de campo en Corrientes, una región que también tenía Ligas Agrarias fuertes pero con una realidad socio-económica muy diferente de la de Santa Fe. Quando Marit e eu começamos a estudar antropologia no início dos anos 70, nosso principal objetivo não era nos preparar para um emprego bem remunerado e uma vida segura e confortável. Tínhamos planos maiores, queríamos mudar o mundo, fazer a diferença e tornar o mundo um lugar melhor. Não confiamos apenas em nossas próprias habilidades, mas também nas potencialidades da antropologia para tudo isso. Aspiramos a demonstrar a relevância social e prática da pesquisa antropológica. Marit e eu tínhamos um interesse comum na América Latina e nós dois estávamos preparados para trabalhar lá aprendendo espanhol. Na década de 1970, o Conselho de Pesquisa da Noruega estabeleceu uma linha de bolsas de estudos para estudos nas chamadas "culturas não europeias". Consegui essa bolsa (19.000 coroas norueguesas) para fazer um trabalho de campo em um novo movimento agrário, as Ligas Agrícolas da Argentina, com Eduardo Archetti. No ano seguinte, Marit obteve outra bolsa para estudar os processos de mudança no povo mapuche do sul do Chile. Devido ao golpe militar no Chile, precisamente em seu aniversário, em 11 de setembro de 1973, ela foi forçada a mudar de plano. Eduardo e eu estávamos fazendo um trabalho de campo entre colonos de algodão no norte da província de Santa Fe, e motivamos Marit e Svein Duus que ele iria fazer um trabalho de campo com ela, para vir à Argentina fazer em Corrientes, região que também possuía fortes ligas agrícolas, mas com uma realidade socioeconômica muito diferente da de Santa Fe.
