It is the result of a double process of anthropization, that is, the societies’ impact on biophysical environment, on the one hand, and the cultural construction of “landscape” notion, on the other (Bertrand, 2008). Therefore, the concept has an ambiguity that makes it a powerful tool for the analysis of complex processes and contemporary phenomena. At the same time, understanding its wider meaning requires taking into consideration the notions of "cultural landscape", "landscape archeology" and "landscape ecology", as they have resulted into specific methodological traditions. In this article, a bibliographic review is done in order to understand the evolution of the concept in the scientific, institutional and artistic spheres. This also helps us understand the differences and similarities between the notions of "landscape" and "cultural landscape", as well as the importance of a number of documents, made for patrimonial conservation purposes, in the definition of both terms El “paisaje” es un constructo cultural que ha ido evolucionando y, en dicho proceso, se ha convertido en un concepto polisémico. Es, a su vez, resultado de un doble proceso de antropización: por un lado, el impacto de las sociedades sobre el ambiente biofísico y, por otra parte, la construcción cultural de la noción de “paisaje” (Bertrand, 2008). Por ello, el vocablo posee una ambigüedad que lo constituye en una poderosa herramienta para analizar los complejos procesos y fenómenos contemporáneos. A su vez, es imposible comprender los diversos enfoques desde el cual ha sido abordado sin considerar las nociones de “paisaje cultural”, “arqueología del paisaje” y “ecología del paisaje”, las cuales han dado lugar a tradiciones y enfoques metodológicos específicos para su análisis. En este artículo, se desarrolla un análisis bibliográfico que nos facilita comprender las transformaciones y usos que se han dado al vocablo a lo largo del tiempo, tanto en el ámbito científico como en el institucional y artístico. Este análisis nos permite comprender, además, las diferencias y similitudes entre las nociones de “paisaje” y “paisaje cultural”, así como la importancia de un número de documentos, realizados con fines de conservación patrimonial, en la definición de ambos términos.
