Sumario:In this paper we will describe and analyze a mathematical modeling activity carried out with students from the last year of a secondary school in the city of Neuquén, Argentina. The main objective of this activity is to offer students a space in which they can have the experience of producing mathematical knowledge from an initial open question raised in an open form, in this case extra mathematical. This type of activities in which mathematical modeling takes a leading role, provide an integrated view of mathematics and allow to reconstruct in the classroom an essential part of the "task" of discipline.
