The main objective of this activity is to offer students a space in which they can have the experience of producing mathematical knowledge from an initial open question raised in an open form, in this case extra mathematical. This type of activities in which mathematical modeling takes a leading role, provide an integrated view of mathematics and allow to reconstruct in the classroom an essential part of the "task" of discipline. En este trabajo vamos a describir y analizar una actividad de modelización matemática realizada con alumnos del último año de una escuela secundaria de la ciudad de Neuquén, Argentina. El objetivo principal de esta actividad es ofrecer a los alumnos un espacio en el que puedan tener la experiencia de producir conocimiento matemático a partir de una cuestión inicial planteada en forma abierta, en este caso extra-matemática. Este tipo de actividades en donde la modelización matemática cobra un rol protagónico, proveen una visión integrada de la matemática y permiten reconstruir en el aula una parte esencial del “quehacer” de la disciplina.
