In order to develop our proposal, we address the issue from works by Juan Bautista Alberdi (1810-1884) and Jose Inácio de Abreu e Lima (1794-1869), two Argentinean and Brazilian intellectuals who, by thinking about the national question, contributed to the forging of a Latin American thought from a perspective of joining the modern world that advanced through America in the nineteenth century. En este artículo, tenemos por objetivo discutir cuestiones referentes a las ideas de pueblo que circulaban por la región del Río de la Plata y el Imperio del Brasil entre las décadas de 1830 y 1850, momento inicial de la construcción del Estado nacional. Para desarrollar nuestra propuesta, abordamos el tema a partir de obras del tucumano Juan Bautista Alberdi (1810-1884) y del pernambucano José Inácio de Abreu e Lima (1794-1869), intelectuales que, al pensar sobre la cuestión nacional, contribuyeron a la forja de un pensamiento latinoamericano dentro de una perspectiva de ingreso en la modernidad que avanzaba por la América del siglo XIX.
