Based on little-explored sources uncovered in the Archivo General de la Nación de México (AGNM), it reveals a parallel history to the coup d’État; some of its facets have remained under an overwhelming flood of historiographical work. My central argument is that conjunctural networks were constituted between Mexico and Guatemala –some public, other clandestine– over a broad ideologial spectrum of lefts with the objective of dissimulating and reducing, through diverse means, the huge impact that the destruction of Guatemala’s democratic bases had on this country. Mi pretensión es abordar el capítulo de las izquierdas mexicanas en el episodio de feroz anticomunismo que marcó la historia aciaga de Guatemala en el contexto de la Guerra Fría, a la luz de fuentes poco exploradas localizadas en el Archivo General de la Nación de México (AGNM) y que desvelan una historia paralela al golpe de Estado; algunas de cuyas facetas han permanecido soterradas bajo un caudal historiográfico impresionante. Mi argumento central es que se constituyeron redes méxico-guatemaltecas coyunturales –tanto públicas como clandestinas– en un abanico ideológico amplio de las izquierdas, con la finalidad de plantar cara y aminorar por diversos medios el fuerte impacto que supuso para Guatemala la destrucción de sus bases democráticas.
