The collapse of the socialist camp and the disintegration of the USSR led to a process of significant social and economic transformations, and changes in its socialist economic model of centralized planning. Since the VI Congress of the Communist Party of Cuba in 2011, the country began a process of "updating the economic and social model" that seeks to increase labor productivity and balance the trade balance, maintaining planning as the main way to address the national economy. However, the impoverished economic situation, as well as the scope of the reforms, have prevented the expected results from being achieved. Las dos últimas décadas de la Revolución cubana han estado marcadas por una profunda crisis económica así como por la continuidad del bloqueo comercial, económico y financiero que le impuso Estados Unidos desde 1960. El derrumbe del campo socialista y la desintegración de la URSS condujeron a un proceso de significativas transformaciones sociales y económicas, y a cambios en su modelo económico socialista de planificación centralizada. Desde el VI Congreso del Partido Comunista de Cuba en 2011 el país inició un proceso de “actualización del modelo económico y social” que busca elevar la productividad del trabajo y equilibrar la balanza comercial, manteniendo la planificación como la principal vía para la dirección de la economía nacional.
