The collapse of the socialist camp and the disintegration of the USSR led to a process of significant social and economic transformations, and changes in its socialist economic model of centralized planning. Since the VI Congress of the Communist Party of Cuba in 2011, the country began a process of "updating the economic and social model" that seeks to increase labor productivity and balance the trade balance, maintaining planning as the main way to address the national economy. However, the impoverished economic situation, as well as the scope of the reforms, have prevented the expected results from being achieved.
