Firstly, we describe the different political-military organizations which came together as a single guerrilla front in October 1980. Secondly, we refer to the context within which the Salvadoran popular movement arises in the mid-80s, and to the articulation of one part of it to the FMLN. A characteristic feature of the new organizations of that period was the claim for the respect of Human Rights and the demand to put an end to a civil war which had visibly exhausted the Salvadoran society. Finally, we discuss the turn in the speech that accompanied the change in the position of the revolutionary movement till the political end of the conflict.
