Sumario:In the city of San Luis, the archive created with the photographic work of José La Vía (1888-1975) represents a significant, symbolic space where the local identity is discursively constructed. In this article, we share the progress of a research project, the purpose of which is to understand the production of La Vía and its participation in the processes of elaboration of memory, identity and visual imagery. Discourse analysis, as an interdisciplinary research practice, is at the base of the methodology of our work. We address a group of images that currently integrate the permanent exhibition of the “Museo Histórico de San Luis”. The studied cases are closely interwoven with other representations —visual and/or textual— within the framework of hegemonic identity projects and account for the relevance that the images of the archive acquire in contemporary visual culture. In this sense, the use of La Vía photographs in discursive contexts associated with the construction of local history make them core elements of our collective memory.
