In this article, we share the progress of a research project, the purpose of which is to understand the production of La Vía and its participation in the processes of elaboration of memory, identity and visual imagery. Discourse analysis, as an interdisciplinary research practice, is at the base of the methodology of our work. We address a group of images that currently integrate the permanent exhibition of the “Museo Histórico de San Luis”. The studied cases are closely interwoven with other representations —visual and/or textual— within the framework of hegemonic identity projects and account for the relevance that the images of the archive acquire in contemporary visual culture. In this sense, the use of La Vía photographs in discursive contexts associated with the construction of local history make them core elements of our collective memory. En la ciudad de San Luis, el archivo conformado a partir de la obra fotográfica de José La Vía (1888-1975) se constituye como un espacio simbólico significativo donde se construye discursivamente la identidad puntana. En este artículo, compartimos el avance de un proyecto de investigación, cuyo propósito es comprender la producción de La Vía y su participación en procesos de elaboración de la memoria, la identidad y el imaginario visual. El análisis discursivo, como práctica de investigación de carácter interdisciplinario, está a la base de la metodología de nuestro trabajo. Abordamos un grupo de imágenes del fotógrafo que actualmente conforman la muestra permanente del Museo Histórico de San Luis. Los casos estudiados se hallan estrechamente entramados con otras representaciones —visuales y/o textuales— en el marco de proyectos identitarios hegemónicos y dan cuenta de la relevancia que las imágenes del acervo adquieren en la cultura visual contemporánea. En este sentido, la utilización de determinadas fotografías de La Vía en contextos discursivos asociados a la construcción de la historia local las torna elementos nucleares de nuestra memoria colectiva.
