The reflection aims at going beyond the descriptive aspects and is centered upon the research on health conditions in an era of social tragedy as the main “object” which in turn may lead, from new epistemological horizons, to consider the paradoxes and impoverishments that the “subject” of knowledge undergo.The keys to the creation of a liberating paradigm in the health sciences are proposed, in order to build capabilities in public health. Este artículo constituye una reflexión sobre temas que permitan dar cumplimiento a “los objetivos del desarrollo del milenio”. En este sentido, se orientan estas reflexiones trascendiendo lo descriptivo y se articula el análisis observando la investigación de las condiciones de salud en una era de tragedia social como principal “objeto”, y que a la vez nos empuje, desde los nuevos horizontes de la epistemología, a mirar también las paradojas y empobrecimientos que pesan sobre el “sujeto” del conocimiento.Se exponen las claves para conformar un paradigma emancipador de las ciencias de la salud, para la construcción de capacidades en salud pública.
