In this specific case, the discussion focuses on the definition and relevance of an approach on health beliefs and practices of pregnant women, characterization of the healthcare model in Uruguay and the relationship of it with the beliefs of this population. El trabajo se inscribe en el marco de la investigación “Creencias y prácticas populares en torno al embarazo y parto: un enfoque sobre el proceso salud-enfermedad”, Depto. de Medicina Preventiva y Social de la Facultad de Medicina, Universidad de la República.El presente artículo pretende ser un marco de referencia previo y una reflexión sobre el contexto en que se enmarca la investigación más general, relativa al sistema de salud como un todo y sus concepciones hegemónicas, en particular sobre las políticas de cuidado de la salud materna, y cómo las mismas contemplan o no las creencias y prácticas extendidas por las usuarias. En este caso específico, la discusión se centra en la definición y pertinencia de un abordaje sobre creencias y prácticas de salud de mujeres gestantes, la caracterización del modelo de atención en Uruguay y la relación del mismo con las creencias de esta población de usuarias.
