| Sumario: | The objective of this study is to determine the quantity and characteristics of suicides in Uruguay from 1887 to 2010 and analyze their distribution according to age, sex and place of residence. This descriptive study is placed in the territory of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay. We worked with the total universe of people who committed suicide. In 123 years there was a significant increase in suicide rate for the whole period (p <0.05), with dramatic increases in times of socioeconomic crisis. The most recent increase is observed in Montevideo in relation to other areas. In the twenty-first century men present the highest rates ever (p <0.05). The rate shows significant increases in the age group 15 to 34 and in the over 65 group, particularly in 2002 and 2010 (p <0.05). We suggest the continuous study and follow up of the National Suicide Prevention Plan approved by the Health Authority. |
