This descriptive study is placed in the territory of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay. We worked with the total universe of people who committed suicide. In 123 years there was a significant increase in suicide rate for the whole period (p <0.05), with dramatic increases in times of socioeconomic crisis. The most recent increase is observed in Montevideo in relation to other areas. In the twenty-first century men present the highest rates ever (p <0.05). The rate shows significant increases in the age group 15 to 34 and in the over 65 group, particularly in 2002 and 2010 (p <0.05). We suggest the continuous study and follow up of the National Suicide Prevention Plan approved by the Health Authority. El objetivo de este estudio es determinar la magnitud y tendencia de las muertes por suicidio en el Uruguay en el período comprendido entre 1887-2010 y analizar su distribución según edad, sexo y lugar de residencia. Es un estudio de tipo descriptivo con área en el territorio de la Republica Oriental del Uruguay. Se trabajó con el total del universo de personas fallecidas por suicidio. En 123 años se observa un aumento significativo de la tasa en todo el periodo (p < 0,05), en especial con aumentos bruscos en tiempos de crisis socioeconómicas, en estos últimos el mayor incrementose debe a Montevideo en relación al Interior del País. El sexo masculino presenta en el siglo XXI los valores más altos de la historia. (p < 0,05) La tasa presenta aumentos significativos en los grupos de edad de 15 a 34 años y en los mayores de 65 años, en especial en el año 2002 y en 2010 (p< 0,05) Se recomienda profundizar y realizar el permanente seguimiento del Plan Nacional de Prevención de Suicidio aprobado porla Autoridad Sanitaria.
