Besides, we examine the level of vulnerability of the population, and its relationship with mortality according to cause of death, specifically external causes. We will mainly focus on these external causes since they are avoidable and because of the age group they impact on. Reducing them woud mean an improvement in life expectancy. We estimate mortality rates and Lost Life Expectancy -developed by Arriaga (1996) to measure the level and change in mortality- using vital statistics provided by the Bureau of Health Information and Statistics of the Nation (DEIS) and our own estimates of population taken from the population Census 2001 and 2010. En este artículo se exploran las características de la mortalidad de las provincias del Noroeste Argentino en el período 2001-2010. Se examina además el nivel de vulnerabilidad de la población, y su vinculación con la mortalidad según causas de muerte, específicamente las causas externas. Se hará foco en este tipo de causas, por ser evitables ,y por el grupo de edad en el que impactan. Reducirlas implicaría una mejora en la esperanza de vida. Se estiman tasas de mortalidad y Años de Esperanza de Vida Perdido –desarrollado por Arriaga (1996); permiten medir el nivel y el cambio de la mortalidad– con estadísticas vitales provistas por la Dirección de Estadísticas e Información de Salud de la Nación (DEIS) y estimaciones de población propias a partir de datos de los Censos de Población de 2001 y 2010. Resumo Neste artigo são exploradas as características da mortalidade das províncias do noroeste da Argentina no período 2001-2010. Além do mais, o nível de vulnerabilidade da população, e sua relação com a mortalidade também foi examinada como causas de morte, especificamente, como causas externas. O foco será colocado neste tipo de caso, por serem evitáveis, e pelo grupo etário no qual impactam.
