We will argue that: 1) it boosted a great deal of research at the time, leading to the understanding of the mechanism of protein synthesis and the formulation of the main dogma of biology; 2) it allowed the consolidation of molecular biology as a new discipline; 3) it promoted visual thinking in biology; 4) although the discovery was not considered as a paradigm change of Kuhnian magnitude, it did boost the current development of epigenetics and related controversial research in the discipline. El presente trabajo expondrá las razones por las cuales consideramos que el descubrimiento de la estructura química del ADN ha sido un hito en la historia de la biología. Argumentaremos que: 1) en la época potenció una gran cantidad de investigaciones, llegándose a comprender el mecanismo de la síntesis de proteínas y a formular el dogma central de la biología; 2) permitió consolidar la biología molecular como una nueva disciplina; 3) potenció el pensamiento visual en biología; 4) si bien el descubrimiento no se configuró como un cambio de paradigma de magnitudes kuhnianas, sí potenció el desarrollo actual de la epigenética y de investigaciones controversiales afines en la disciplina.
