Gonzalez, Sofía Ariadna Transformaciones urbanas espacios públicos costeros segregación socio-espacial From its origins, the processes of distinction and of socio-spatial segregation have accompanied the territorial transformations of Mar del Plata in its consolidation as a seaside resort. The change from class tourism to mass tourism was what prompted the need for wealthy sectors, who used to spend the summer in the city's "golden years", to abandon the spas where they used to spend the summer period for others, each time further away from the center of Mar del Plata, in search of preserving and maintaining distinction and exclusivity by staying away from those new tourists belonging to popular sectors that began to frequent the city. Through a historical journey through the origins of Mar del Plata, this article aims to investigate how tourist activity has become an excuse and the driving force behind the urbanization and privatization processes of the coastal area, promoting growing segregation socio-spatial from the search for social distinction of the old vacationers of the city. Desde sus orígenes, los procesos de distinción y de segregación socio-espacial han acompañado las transformaciones territoriales de Mar del Plata en su consolidación como ciudad balnearia. El cambio de un turismo de clase por uno de masas fue lo que impulsó la necesidad de los sectores acomodados, que solían veranear en los “años dorados” de la ciudad, de abandonar los balnearios donde solían pasar el periodo estival por otros, cada vez más alejados del centro marplatense, en busca de preservar y mantener la distinción y exclusividad alejándose de aquellos nuevos turistas pertenecientes a sectores populares que comenzaron a frecuentar la ciudad. A través de un recorrido histórico por los orígenes de Mar del Plata, este artículo se propone indagar en cómo la actividad turística se ha convertido en una excusa y en el elemento motor de los procesos de urbanización y privatización del espacio costero, impulsando la creciente segregación socio-espacial a partir de la búsqueda de distinción social de los antiguos veraneantes de la ciudad.
