This affair was inherited first by Venezuela and more recently by Guyana, after their respective independences, with episodes of intervention of third states as was practice in our continent. The treatment of this topic permits us to analyze basic concepts like territory, delimitation, demarcation, succession of states, among others. This is ultimately the acquisition of sovereign rights over territories in South America, originating in the Spanish colonial system and its dispute with Britain. Entre las cuestiones limítrofes pendientes en América del Sur analizamos la del Esequibo, pendiente actualmente entre Venezuela y Guyana, por la variedad de aristas interesantes para el internacionalista que la misma plantea. Esta cuestión fue heredada en primer lugar por Venezuela y en tiempos más recientes por Guyana, luego de las respectivas independencias, con episodios de intervención de terceros estados como fuera de práctica en nuestro continente. El tratamiento de este tema permite analizar conceptos básicos como el de territorio, delimitación, demarcación, sucesión de estados, entre otros. Se trata en definitiva de la adquisición de derechos soberanos sobre territorios sudamericanos, con origen en el sistema colonial español y sus disputas con el británico.
