It distinguishes five periods of Argentinian history in order to portray and assess the legislation sanctioned in the matter. Conclusions reveal that, historically, the different branches of State have used secrecy to hide activities and agreementsfrom citizenship. And, although over the years this practice has been positively curtailed, a much more controversial type of secret has been legitimized: secret documents, which classification authority are agencies in charge of intelligence, defense and security tasks. Este artículo desarrolla los antecedentes teóricos y la práctica del secreto de Estado, contrastando sus tensiones con las leyes de acceso a la información pública. Para ello, se distinguen cinco períodos de la historia Argentina en los que se reconstruye la legislación sancionada en la materia y se valora su evolución. Las conclusiones revelan que, en el pasado, los diferentes poderes del Estado se han valido del secreto para ocultar actividades y acuerdos a la ciudadanía. Y, aunque con los años se ha cercenado positivamente dicha potestad, también se ha legitimado un tipo de secreto mucho más controvertido: los documentos secretos, potestad de los organismos encargados a tareas de inteligencia, defensa y seguridad.
