This work aimed to determine the ideal number of years, replications, and test locations to evaluate the yield and quality of wheat cultivars for reliable comparison. The data evaluated were obtained from the Argentine Comparative Trials Network for Wheat Cultivars, which includes evaluations with and without fungicides, and different sowing dates. The following grain variables were analyzed: yield, ash percentage, farinograph stability, wet gluten concentration, test weight, thousandgrain weight, protein concentration, percent flour yield, bread volume, and alveograph strength. Variance components were obtained using restrictedmaximum likelihood. The results indicated an optimum number of replicates of at least four for yield and between two and six for quality. At least five locations are required to evaluate yield, but quality varies depending on the trait, with four locations being sufficient for most. In general, four years of trials were sufficient.These results will improve the efficiency and reliability of bread wheat cultivar testing networks. En los programas de mejora genética de trigo debe definirse la estructura óptima de la base de datos para la comparación de cultivares. Este trabajo tuvo como objetivo determinar el número óptimo de repeticiones, localidadesy años de ensayo para evaluar rendimiento y calidad de cultivares de trigo. Los datos fueron obtenidos de la Red Argentina de Ensayos Comparativos de Cultivares de Trigo, que incluye evaluaciones con y sin fungicidas, y diferentes fechas de siembra. Las variables analizadas fueron rendimiento, porcentajede cenizas, estabilidad farinográfica, concentración de gluten húmedo, peso hectolítrico, peso de mil granos, concentración de proteína, rendimiento de harina, volumen de pan y fuerza alveográfica. Los componentes de la varianza se obtuvieron utilizando máxima verosimilitud restringida. Los resultadosobtenidos indican un número óptimo de repeticiones de al menos cuatro, para rendimiento, y entre dos y seis para calidad. Para rendimiento se requieren al menos cinco localidades, y para calidad varía según el rasgo, siendo cuatro un número adecuado para la mayoría. En general, fueron suficientes cuatro años de ensayo. Estos resultados permitirán mejorar la eficiencia y confiabilidad de las redes de ensayos de cultivares de trigo pan.
