In every substrate it was analized the percentage with air pores, water holding capacity pores and total pores. Irrigation water in each treatment was recorded and it was measured the root dry mass (MSR), above ground dry mass (MSA) and the relationship MSA/MSR of each seedling. There were no differences in soil pores and water holding capacity pores between treatments of the same substrate. In the first trial, the irrigation water was lower in the T8, without differences between the other treatments and in the second trial it was lower in the T7. In both trials and treatments of the same substrate, there was higher MSA in seedlings of treatments with 1.5 g hydrogel, except the substrate B of the first trial. The incorporation of hydrogel did not significantly reduce the irrigation water needs but favored the increase of seedling MSA. Se evaluó la incorporación de hidrogel al sustrato para la producción deplantines de Impatiens walleriana. Los ensayos se realizaron en otoño/invierno y en primavera. Tratamientos: T1) sustrato A + 0,5 g L-1, T2) sustrato A + 1g L-1, T3) sustrato A + 1,5 g L-1, T4) sustrato A sin hidrogel, T5) sustrato B + 0,5 g L-1, T6) sustrato B + 1 g L-1, T7) sustrato B + 1,5 g L-1, T8) sustrato B sin hidrogel. A cada sustrato se analizó el porcentaje de poros con aire, agua y total. Se contabilizó el agua de riego utilizada por tratamiento y al finalizar, se midió la masa seca radical (MSR), aérea (MSA) y la relación MSA/MSR de cada plantín. No hubo diferencias de poros con aire y agua entre tratamientos de un mismo sustrato. En el primer ensayo, el agua de riego fue inferior en elT8, sin diferencias entre los restantes tratamientos; en el segundo ensayo fue menor en el T7. En ambos ensayos, en tratamientos de un mismo sustrato, tuvieron mayor MSA los plantines de los tratamientos con 1,5 g de hidrogel, excepto el sustrato B del primer ensayo. La incorporación del hidrogel no disminuyó considerablemente el agua de riego, pero favoreció el desarrollo de los plantines.
