This term is used to define both a laboratory test and what is called field early vigor. Previous experiences have shown contradictory results and in the case of the reciprocal effects, sufficient information is lacking on gene action and reciprocal effects that regulate early maize vigor. The objective of this work was to evaluate the combining ability and reciprocal effects for early vigor, including grain yield, under laboratory and field conditions. Twenty hybrids resulting from a diallel cross among five inbred lines including reciprocal crosses were used. In laboratory a test simulating drought stress was performed at -1,4 MPa. Characters related to early vigor were evaluated both under laboratory and field conditions. The results showed the importance of non additive effects in the variables evaluated in the field tests, while in the laboratory tests the expression was predominantly governed by additive effects. The reciprocal effects were important for all the variables, indicating the necessity to determine the maternal inbred lines with high expression that contribute to the improvement of early vigor. El vigor temprano es considerado un componente esencial del desarrollo de los cultivos bajo condiciones limitantes. Este término se utiliza tanto para definir una prueba en laboratorio como también el vigor temprano a campo. Experiencias previas han mostrado resultados contrapuestos y en el caso de los efectos recíprocos, no existe suficiente información sobre los efectos génicos que regulan el vigor temprano en maíz. El objetivo de este trabajo fue estimar los efectos de aptitud combinatoria y efectos recíprocos para vigor en laboratorio y a campo, incluyendo el rendimiento. Se utilizaron 20 híbridos simples y recíprocos provenientes de la cruza dialélica de 5 líneas endocriadas. En laboratorio se realizó un test simulando estrés hídrico a -1,4 MPa. Se evaluaron variables relacionadas con el vigor en laboratorio y a campo. Los resultados mostraron la importancia de los efectos no aditivos en las variables de vigor a campo, a diferencia de los ensayos en laboratorio donde la expresión estuvo gobernada predominantemente por efectos aditivos. Los efectos recíprocos fueron importantes para todas las variables, lo que indica la necesidad de determinar las líneas maternas con alta expresión que contribuyan al incremento en la mejora genética del vigor temprano.
