description In recent decades, the constant interweaving between the intimacy of public life and the commodification of privacy has gained major relevance for the social sciences. Likewise, it was pointed out that the ways of thinking about hegemonic masculinities (and their mandates) are plural, in constant dispute (Connell and Messerschmidt, 2005; Archetti, 2003), and affected by economic, social and racial inequalities (Bourgois, 2010; Jiménez, 2004). In this article, we analyze, from an ethnographic methodology and perspective, the limits and possibilities that men from the AMBA (Metropolitan Area of Buenos Aires) find to put their intimacy into practice. Firstly, we reconstruct the place that intimacy has had in the emergence of modernity and the consolidation of the public and private spheres that established a series of oppositions and dualisms and, more contemporaneously, has allowed us to begin to think about a type of overlapping intimacy with the public world (Arfuch, 2005). Secondly, we focus on the ways of thinking about and experiencing intimacies for and by men, and how they are linked to the transformations and disputes in masculine subjectivities. The dimension of the domestic as well as the sphere of communication of emotions constitute problematic aspects and may be the cause of great discomfort for men in the constitution of new types of masculine identities and subjectivities. The spatial dimension, which involves the management of proximities and the requirements of the labor market, exhibits new modes and an exercise of masculinities that show that they are being tested and resignified in a social context in transformation.

En las últimas décadas, ha cobrado principal relevancia para las ciencias sociales la constante imbricación entre la intimización de la vida pública y la mercantilización de la intimidad. Asimismo, se señaló que los modos de pensar las masculinidades hegemónicas (y sus mandatos) son plurales, en constante disputa (Connell y Messerschmidt, 2005; Archetti, 2003) y atravesadas por desigualdades económicas, sociales y raciales (Bourgois, 2010; Jiménez, 2004). En este artículo analizamos, desde una metodología y perspectiva etnográfica, los límites y posibilidades que encuentran varones del Área Metropolitana de Buenos Aires (AMBA) para practicar su intimidad. En primer lugar, reconstruimos el lugar que ha tenido la intimidad en la aparición de la modernidad y la consolidación de las esferas pública y privada que establecieron una serie de oposiciones y dualismos y, más contemporáneamente, permitieron comenzar a pensar en un tipo de intimidad superpuesta con el mundo de lo público (Arfuch, 2005). En segundo lugar, nos enfocamos en las formas de pensar y experimentar las intimidades para y por los varones y cómo se vinculan con las transformaciones y disputas en las propias subjetividades masculinas. La dimensión de lo doméstico y la esfera de la comunicación de las emociones constituyen aspectos problemáticos y de gran incomodidad para los varones en la constitución de identidades y subjetividades masculinas de nuevo tipo. La dimensión espacial y el manejo de las proximidades y los requisitos del mercado laboral exhiben nuevos modos y ejercicios de masculinidad que evidencian estar siendo puestos a prueba y resignificados en un contexto social en transformación. O artigo aborda a relação entre masculinidade e intimidade e tem como objetivo mostrar como os modos como os modos de pensar e vivenciar as intimidades dos homens na AMBA afetam o modo como eles constroem uma subjetividade que se evidencia na transformação. Partindo de uma investigação socioantropológica baseada em entrevistas semiestruturadas com homens de setores médios e populares da AMBA e trabalhando com histórias de vida, focamos em particular nas formas de pensar e vivenciar intimidades para e por homens e como elas estão ligadas às transformações e disputas nas próprias subjetividades masculinas. Interessa-nos, em primeiro lugar, reconstruir o lugar que a intimidade teve na emergência da modernidade e na consolidação das esferas pública e privada e depois analisar a forma como a esfericalização do mundo permitiu a construção de uma série de oposições e dualismos e, mais contemporaneamente, permitiu-nos começar a pensar num tipo de intimidade sobreposta ao mundo público. Em segundo lugar, refletir sobre os limites e possibilidades de modificação das identidades genéricas na reconfiguração das suas intimidades a partir das transformações contemporâneas nos modos de sobreposição entre o público e o privado.
