| Sumario: | In this paper, I examine the languages used in the names of shops located on Sarandí Avenue, in the city of Rivera, Uruguay, bordering Brazil. Rivera is a community predominantly bilingual in Spanish-Portuguese. The public signage gives us information about the linguistic situation of the community. The linguistic decisions of the speakers are framed by public actions, but also by private actions, reflected in the shops’ names of the downtown space of Rivera. In this work, I found that the languages most present in the trade names are Spanish and English, and, contrary to what could be expected given the characteristics of the community, Portuguese was not present. |
