Some features that give relevance to this institution are pondered and in the article examples of how its existence is linked to the city of Morelia, social mobilizations, cultural projects, outstanding scientific and humanistic contributions, the institutionalization of knowledge, are included, among other matters relevant to Mexican society. In these and other subjects the university is involved, and it has been possible to write about them from their historical collections. Telling that story has led to the appearance of what can be considered an institutional historiography. In 2017 the first centenary of this institution was celebrated and the interest and publications about its history acquired a new impulse.   Key Words: Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo, University Archives, History of the Public University in Mexico, Historiography of higher education in Mexico. En el artículo se busca destacar el papel del Archivo Histórico de la Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo en la construcción y escritura de su historia. Se ponderan algunas características que confieren relevancia a esta institución y se exponen ejemplos de cómo su existencia está ligada a la ciudad de Morelia, a movilizaciones sociales, a proyectos culturales, a destacados aportes científicos y humanísticos, a la institucionalización de saberes, entre otros asuntos relevantes para la sociedad mexicana. En estos y otros temas está implicada la Universidad y sobre ellos se ha podido escribir a partir de sus acervos históricos. Dar cuenta de esa historia ha llevado a la aparición de lo que puede considerarse como una historiografía institucional, en la que desde diversas perspectivas se ha hecho referencia a su trayectoria a lo largo del tiempo. En 2017 se celebró el primer centenario de esta institución y el interés y publicaciones sobre su historia adquirieron un nuevo impulso.   Palabras clave: Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo, Archivos universitarios, Historia de la Universidad pública en México, Historiografía de la educación superior en México.
