In addition to the objectives indicated, it has another purpose. And that is that many are determinists when it comes to science, but, out of a trace of pusillanimity, think that there may be powerful philosophical motives that can or should make them change their position when it comes to the so-called moral sciences. Finally, a theory exercises a power all the more seductive and deceptive over the minds of men, and they consider it all the more worthy of respect and observance, the more abstruse and impenetrable are the reasonings with which it is defended.
