The Listerian era marked the beginning of a fundamentally important period in the prognosis of surgical interventions, since up to that time, skillfully performed surgery suffered the greatest failures in the face of infection. From that moment on, efforts to improve techniques, to perfect the reconstruction of the anatomical planes and to avoid recurrences multiplied. Desde muy antiguo, ha constituído una preocupación de los cirujanos la reducción de las hernias, cualquiera fuera su localización. Con la era Listeriana se inicia un período fundamentalmente importante en el pronóstico de las intervenciones quirúrgicas, ya que hasta ese momento la cirugía hábilmente practicada, sufría los más grandes fracasos frente a la infección. Desde ese momento se multiplican los esfuerzos por mejorar las técnicas, perfeccionar la reconstrucción de los planos anatómicos y evitar las recidivas.
