We refer to nationalisms. They spread over Latin American countries in relation with different variables such as political and social changes or international situation, which gave many opportunities to express hostility against the foreign or different. The mentors of nationalisms were engaged in the construction of a nation. For that purpose it was necessary, among other things, to make clear that even if they all were Latin Americans they didn’t share the same characteristics. With regard to that issue, this article proposes to analyze a representative sample of diplomatic writings which were produced in the Southern Cone. We consider them as a modality of political discourse as well as an efficient instrument of the construction of a particular image of the other. Although these writings constituted the expression of a group of public officials who addressed their message to a limited addressee, such as the chancelleries of their countries, who enunciated these discourses were also journalists, men of letters or intellectuals who spread their ideas to wider social sectors. In that way, they facilitated the appropriation and permanence of these discourses in other social sectors of national societies. En la segunda mitad del siglo XIX y principios del XX comenzaba a cobrar importancia en América Latina un conjunto de ideas que alcanzaría repercusiones imprevisibles, nos referimos a los nacionalismos. Éstos se expandieron en función de variables tales como los cambios sociales y políticos, así como la situación internacional, que proporcionaba muchas oportunidades de expresar hostilidad contra el extraño o diferente. Sus mentores estaban comprometidos con la construcción de una nación y para ello era necesario, entre otras cosas, poner en claro que si bien todos éramos latinoamericanos, eso no significaba que tuviésemos demasiadas características en común. Al respecto, el presente estudio se propone analizar una muestra representativa de escritos diplomáticos producidos en el ámbito del Cono Sur, considerándolos como una modalidad del discurso político y como un instrumento eficiente para la construcción de una particular imagen del otro. Si bien, éstos constituyen la expresión de un grupo de funcionarios públicos que dirigían su mensaje a un destinatario acotado, como eran las cancillerías de sus países; quienes los enunciaban fueron también periodistas, hombres deletras o intelectuales, que difundieron sus ideas a sectores más amplios, facilitando la apropiación y perdurabilidad de este discurso en otros sectores de las sociedades nacionales.
