The hypothesis is that the need of the Spaniards to protect the Mapuche border opened a space to obtain these rights for the early colonized Indians within the territory of colonial rule in exchange for their defensive military presence and military services on the border. Este trabajo analiza cómo los indígenas del centro de Cuyo obtuvierron y defendieron el reconocimiento de tierras y liderazgos en las lagunas de Guanacache y Corocorto desde fines del siglo XVII hasta principios del XIX. La hipótesis principal es que la necesidad de los españoles de proteger la frontera con pueblos mapuche abrió un espacio para la obtención de esos derechos para los indios tempranamente colonizados al interior del territorio de dominio colonial, a cambio de su presencia militar defensiva y servicios militares en la frontera.
