This element/substance (элемент/вещество) distinction of his may sound straightforward, but it was progressively distorted then lost in the West, starting with the mistranslation of his Russian into German and into English (both in 1891). Post‑1891, a kind of ‘telephone’ game ensued, so that new layers of misrepresentation were added over a span of 150+ years. Here, by studying the Russian urtext, we endeavor to correct the record and, for those who might be curious, we show step by step how the misinterpretations multiplied until certain philosophers of chemistry in all seriousness proposed Kant as the possible source of the ontological concept that is Mendeleev’s alone. Esta distinción suya elemento/sustancia (элемент/вещество) puede parecer sencilla, pero se distorsionó progresivamente y luego se perdió en Occidente, comenzando con la mala traducción de su ruso al alemán y al inglés (ambos en 1891). Después de 1891, se produjo una especie de juego de “teléfono”, por lo que se agregaron nuevas capas de tergiversación en un lapso de 150+ años. Aquí, mediante el estudio del urtext ruso, nos esforzamos por corregir el registro y, para aquellos que tengan curiosidad, mostramos paso a paso cómo las malas interpretaciones se multiplicaron hasta que ciertos filósofos de la química propusieron con toda seriedad a Kant como la posible fuente del concepto ontológico que es solo de Mendeleev.
