Sumario:This paper is focused on the analysis of three Jesuit sources, through which I seek to reconstruct the history of smallpox based on the fear of death and its different manifestations. Furthermore, I address the earthly and heavenly antidotes that were proposed to combat this pandemic, among which the heavenly ones were regarded as more valid. Adding to this premise, it is argued that behind the Jesuit discourse there is a moralizing message in which the demographic decline is justified as a product of God’s revenge upon the sinful behavior of the Guarani.
