Furthermore, I address the earthly and heavenly antidotes that were proposed to combat this pandemic, among which the heavenly ones were regarded as more valid. Adding to this premise, it is argued that behind the Jesuit discourse there is a moralizing message in which the demographic decline is justified as a product of God’s revenge upon the sinful behavior of the Guarani. El presente artículo está enfocado en el análisis de tres fuentes jesuitas, por medio de las cuales busco reconstruir la historia de la viruela a partir del miedo a la muerte y sus distintas manifestaciones. Asimismo, expongo los antídotos terrenales y celestiales que se plantean para combatir esta pandemia, entre los que se aprecia con mayor poder los celestiales. Con esto último se constata que detrás del discurso jesuítico se halla un mensaje moralizante en el que se justifica el declive demográfico como producto de la venganza de Dios por el comportamiento pecaminoso de los guaraníes.
