| Sumario: | The work reflects on conceptual and communicational problems posed by the worldwide expansion of Christianity along the 16th and 17thcenturies and the role of the Jesuit order in this process, with specialfocus on nonlinguistic forms of communication and particularly on the iconic ones. The work reviews the reworking of the idea of hieroglyphs by Athanasius Kircher and other members of the order, based on Neoplatonic and Renaissance tradition, as well as the consideration of the sign lan-guages of China and America and their interest intransmitting religious contents taking advantage of non-European experiences and avoiding the distance of words. |
