A finales de la década del 30, el matemático inglés Alan Turing logró descifrar los códigos con los que se comunicaban los nazis. De esta manera, los Aliados tenían información no solo de las operaciones militares que planificaba el Tercer Reich sino también de la política de gestión de los enemigos del Estado: judíos, gitanos, homosexuales, testigos de Jehová, discapacitados.
