Objectives: Estimate the incidence of infection, hospitalization and fatality due to COVID-19 in cancer patients diagnosed between January 1, 2018 and December 31, 2020, treated at a Hospital in the city of Mar del Plata and evaluate risk factors for infection.
Methods: retrospective cohort study in cancer patients aged 15 years or older. Demographic variables, comorbidities, tumor characteristics, oncological treatments, infection, hospitalization and death due to COVID-19 were collected. Kaplan-Meier curves and a Cox regression model were fitted, the time until infection was the response variable.
Results: 995 patients were included and 8.9% had COVID-19. 95.6% had solid tumors, 41.4% had severe forms of cancer, 1.7% had more than one malignant tumor and 10.9% had tumors with metastatic forms. Patients under 60 years of age, with hematological cancer and/or severe forms of cancer had significantly higher risk of COVID-19 infection.
Discussion: The greater circulation and exposure in those under 60 years of age could explain the higher risk of infection, while the decrease in the immune status in the case of solid cancers with more severe stages or those of a hematological type could explain the higher risk. |

Introducción: El COVID-19 afectó diferencialmente a individuos con enfermedades crónicas como cáncer, con mayor gravedad y mortalidad que la población general. Objetivos: Estimar incidencia de infección, internación y letalidad por COVID-19 en pacientes con cáncer diagnosticados entre el 1 de enero del 2018 y 31 de diciembre del 2020, atendidos en un Hospital de la ciudad de Mar del Plata y evaluar factores de riesgo de infección. Métodos: estudio de cohorte retrospectivo en pacientes con cáncer de 15 años o más. Se relevaron variables demográficas, comorbilidades, características del tumor, tratamientos oncológicos, infección, internación y fallecimiento por COVID-19. Se ajustaron curvas de Kaplan-Meier y un modelo de regresión de Cox; la variable respuesta fue el tiempo hasta la infección. Resultados: Se incluyeron 995 pacientes, 8,9% tuvieron COVID-19. 95,6% presentaban tumores sólidos, 41.4% formas graves de cáncer, 1.7% más de un tumor maligno y 10,9% tumores con formas metastásicas. Los pacientes menores de 60 años, con cáncer hematológico y/o formas graves de cáncer presentaron mayor riesgo de infección por COVID-19. Discusión: La mayor circulación y exposición en los menores de 60 años podrían explicar el mayor riesgo de infección, mientras que la disminución del estado inmunitario lo sería en el caso de los cánceres sólidos con estadios más severos o los de tipo hematológico. Objetivos: Estimar a incidência de infecção, hospitalização e letalidade por COVID-19 em pacientes oncológicos diagnosticados entre 1º de janeiro de 2018 e 31 de dezembro de 2020, atendidos num Hospital da cidade de Mar del Plata e avaliar fatores de risco para infecção. Métodos: estudo de coorte retrospectivo em pacientes oncológicos com 15 anos ou mais. Foram coletadas variáveis demográficas, comorbidades, características tumorais, tratamentos oncológicos, infecção, internação e óbito por COVID-19. Foram ajustadas curvas de Kaplan-Meier e modelo de regressão de Cox; a variável resposta foi o tempo até a infecção. Resultados: foram incluídos 995 pacientes e 8,9% tinham COVID-19. 95,6% tinham tumores sólidos, 41,4% formas graves de câncer, 1,7% mais de um tumor maligno e 10,9% tumores com formas metastáticas. Pacientes com menos de 60 anos de idade, com câncer hematológico e/ou formas graves de câncer tiveram um risco significativamente aumentado de infecção por COVID-19. Discussão: A maior circulação e exposição em pessoas com menos de 60 anos poderiam explicar o maior risco de infecção, enquanto a diminuição do estado imunológico seria o caso dos cânceres sólidos com estágios de maior gravidade ou do tipo hematológico.
