It is well known that weather influences mammalian testicular function. Regarding humans, studies show conflictive results, and causal factors are poorly understood. The aim of this retrospective observational study was to assess the possible seasonal variation in cordovans seminal quality, evaluating semen samples from patients attending an andrology center (Laboratorio de Andrología y Reproducción –LAR-) during the last 20 years (2011-2020). In addition, to analyze the possible associations between seminal parameters and meteorological variables.
After signing written informed consent, all the patients attending LAR were recruited. Application of exclusion criteria left 17584 patients for subsequent statistical analysis. Depending on calendar date of evaluation, semen samples were classified in four groups (spring, summer, autumn and winter). Meteorological parameters evaluated were seasonal mean temperature (T), thermal sensation (TS), humidity (H) and atmospheric pressure (P). Seasonal variations were analyzed by ANOVA and Chi square test, and the associations between seminal and meteorological parameters were evaluated by Pearson´s correlation test and multiple lineal regression models.
Winter showed higher mean values (vs summer; p<0.05) in sperm concentration (74.59±0.88 vs. 67.79±1.01x106/ml), total sperm count (203.00±2.52 vs. 185.24±2.89x106), total motile sperm count (11162.39±162.12 vs. 10343.67±186.07x106) and nuclear maturity (75.87±0.19 vs. 73.55±0.24%). In accordance, higher frequencies of sperm abnormalities were found on summer, while the lowest were found in winter (p<0.05), for sperm concentration, total count, nuclear maturity and oligoasthenoteratozoospermia. Except for sperm motility and membrane functional integrity, all seminal parameters showed a significant linear correlation coefficients with at least one meteorological variable (p<0.05). As an example, coefficients for sperm concentration with T, ST, P and H were 0.79, -0.83, 0.65 and -0.60, respectively.
In summary, seminal quality was significantly higher in winter. Since spermatogenesis lasts around 74 days, it is possible to assume that the meteorological conditions of the autumn in Córdoba would be the best season for spermatogenesis.

Es conocido que el clima (estacionalidad) impacta en la fisiología testicular de mamíferos; en la especie humana sin embargo, los hallazgos son conflictivos y los factores causales no han sido completamente caracterizados. El objetivo del presente estudio observacional retrospectivo fue analizar la posible variación estacional de la calidad seminal en los últimos de 20 años, en los pacientes asistentes al Laboratorio de Andrología y Reproducción (LAR) de Córdoba. Asimismo, se evaluaron las asociaciones entre los parámetros seminales y variables meteorológicas. Se reclutaron a todos los pacientes del LAR que firmaron consentimiento (período 2001-2020) y luego de aplicar los criterios de exclusión, trabajamos con una muestra de 17584 pacientes. Las muestras se clasificaron, según su fecha calendario de evaluación, en cuatro grupos estacionales: primavera, verano, otoño e invierno. Las variables meteorológicas evaluadas para ese período fueron temperatura (T), sensación térmica (ST), humedad (H) y presión atmosférica (P) (utilizando una media estacional/año). Las variaciones estacionales fueron evaluadas mediante ANAVA y test Chi-cuadrado, y las asociaciones entre variables espermáticas y climáticas, mediante test de correlación de Pearson y regresiones lineales múltiples. Se detectaron valores promedios mayores en invierno respecto al verano (p<0,05) para concentración espermática (74.59±0.88 vs. 67.79±1.01x106/ml), recuento total de espermatozoides (203.00±2.52 vs. 185.24±2.89x106), recuento total de móviles (11162.39±162.12 vs 10343.67±186.07x106) y madurez nuclear (75.87±0.19 vs. 73.55±0.24%). Coincidentemente, las frecuencias de anormalidades fueron mínimas en invierno y máximas en verano (p<0,05) para concentración, recuento total, madurez nuclear y oligoastenoteratozoospermia. Todas las variables del espermograma, excepto motilidad e integridad funcional de la membrana, mostraron coeficientes de correlación lineal significativos (p<0,05) con al menos una variable meteorológica. Por ejemplo, los coeficientes para concentración espermática fueron de r=-0,79 con T, r=-0,83 con ST, r=0,65 con P y r=-0,60 con H. Los modelos de selección de variables consolidaron a los parámetros ST y H como los mejores predictores. En conclusión, la calidad seminal fue significativamente mejor durante el invierno. Por ello y dado que la espermatogénesis en el humano requiere aproximadamente 74 días, es posible inferir que las condiciones climáticas del otoño cordobés serían las ideales para la función espermática.
