Human resources and materiales invested to reverse their profile have been significant indeed; however, in Latín America results at epidemiological level have proved to be insufflcient . These results are indicative of strategies that the Public Health Authorities as well as Institutions in charge of Professional Training should implement in order to approach and solve the prohlems caused by oral pathologies. One of these strategies is the introduction of Community Health Programs, which promote dental health through organized community efforts, in which Health Community groups, Family gropus, and Dental Professionals take part. Conimunity Dentistry means Community Health Dentistry. Preventive care and assistance is directed to all the members of the community, healthy or iii. This forrn of dental practice is hased on the belief that the individual patient is the community itself. This simple concept makes the difference which develops methods and sets actions for the Dental Professionals to accomplish their goals. Desde sus inicios la Odontología ha dedicado sus mayores esfuerzos a paliar las consecuencias de estas enfermedades Los recursos humanos y materiales invertidos en revertir el perfil de las mismas han sido enormes y los resultados a nivel epidemiológico, en especial en América Latina, han sido insuficientes. Estos resultados son los que le están indicando a las autoridades de salud como a las instituciones formadoras de recursos humanos, que deben implementarse cambios de estrategias en el abordaje y para la resolución de esta problemática. Una de estas estrategias posibles de implementar a fin de llegar al conjunto de la población con practicas preventivas y de atención basadas en el abordaje comunitario, con orientación y enfoque poblacional, son los programas de salud comunitaria. que deberán ser implementados por equipos de salud familiar y comunitaria, que los odontólogos deben integrar. La Odontología Comunitaria ,es la Odontología de la Salud Comunitaria y supone la prestación de servicios asistenciales y preventivos a todas las personas sanas o enfermas que componen una comunidad. El paciente en odontología comunitaria es la comunidad y este simple concepto es el que hace la diferencia y condiciona las actuaciones y métodos que el profesional odontólogo debe abordar para alcanzar logros en un programa de salud bucal.
