The hemangiomas are benign tumors composed of blood vessels of congenital origin, arising from the embryonic remains of the mesodermal tissue in early childhood, formed by rapidly proliferating endothelial cells. In the oral cavity they are found mainly in the lip, tongue and jugal mucosa, since this is a zone of great vascularization and capillary networks that enable their development. In a smaller proportion it appears on the gum, floor of mouth, jaws and floor of the orbit. Early diagnosis is important to avoid complications due to local growth. Therefore, our objective was to evaluate the casuistry of vascular tumors received in the Pathological Anatomy Service at the Faculty of Dentistry, National University of Cordoba.
The study was retrospective and descriptive. Archival material from the Pathological Anatomy Service of the Faculty of Dentistry of the National University of Cordoba was used, between 1984 and 2018 (n = 11417). The samples were colored with the rutin technique (H / E). Gender, age and location data were obtained from the clinical histories of each patient. Descriptive statistical analysis was carried out.
A total of 43 benign vascular tumors were recorded, with a period prevalence of 0.37% and an annual average of 1.23. 58.1% were female and 41.9% male. He presented 39.5% on the oral mucosa, 27.9% on the lower lip, 14% on the tongue and 9.3% on the upper lip. In addition, there are cases isolated in bottom of sulcus, palate and intraosseous. To analyze the age of the patients (average 40.3), 60.5% were older than 35 years, 25.6% young and 14% child. Histopathologically, the cavernous variety represents 41.9%, 30.2% capillary and 27.9% mixed (capillary proliferation combined with another type of connective lineage).
The present study shows a low number of cases of vascular tumors, over a period of 35 years. This occurs because, despite being frequent in the oral cavity, biopsy is not performed due to the risks that the surgical procedure entails. In some cases, there are more frequent cavernous hemangiomas with respect to other varieties. |
