It is considered to be the parasitic disease with the highest economic burden in Latin America due to its prolonged chronicity; in addition, it has begun to be a challenge for doctors in the United States and European countries due to the immigration of people coming from countries in the endemic zone. La enfermedad de Chagas, descubierta hace 103 años, sigue siendo en la actualidad una de las principales endemias que afecta al continente americano. Entre 15 y 16 millones de personas están infectadas con Trypanosoma cruzi y más de 25 millones de personas corren el riesgo de contraer la enfermedad. Se estima que en 2008 la enfermedad de Chagas produjo la muerte de 10.000 personas. Está considerada como la enfermedad parasitaria con mayor carga económica en América Latina debido a su prolongada cronicidad; además ha comenzado a ser un desafío para los médicos de Estados Unidos y de países europeos debido a la inmigración de personas que proceden de países de zona endémica.
